How to Burn the Most Calories on Your Exercise Bike
Walk into any gym in the country and look around. The most popular used pieces of exercise equipment tend to be the stationary bike and the treadmill. Between the two, the stationary bike does seem to be more popular as it does not place much pressure on the knees and ankles like the treadmill does. Those who are very over weight or who have physical problems tend to get more use out of the common stationary bike.
There is something that you should know though. While the stationary exercise bike does burn calories, it does not burn them as fast as other machines. This is mainly due to the short range of motion. There are things that you can do to make sure that you are getting the most out of your workout, as well as things that you need to avoid.
For example, do not pedal away as you are pedaling for your life. While it may seem as though the faster you pedal, the faster you will get in shape, it is not true. The best thing you can do for yourself is to add some resistance to your pedaling and slow down your speed. You need to resistance in the pedals to challenge yourself.
Another thing that you will want to do is to make sure that you are not letting discomfort cut your workout shorter than it should be. You want to make sure that you are getting the seat in the correct position and that your knees are slightly bent when they are fully extended to the pedals. If you find that your seat is just too uncomfortable, go out and purchase a gel seat cover of padded shorts meant for cycling. This will help ease the discomfort.
You also want to make sure that you are staying on the exercise bike for at least a straight twenty to thirty minutes. This is to make sure that you are getting to burn enough calories. When you first begin, if that amount of time is simply too much for you, you will want to go ahead and reduce the amount of time. Stay on the bike for as long as possible. If that amount of time is only for ten minutes, that is fine, do not give up. Just keep up with it and eventually you will find that you are able to extend your time.
Now that you know how to make the most of your time spent on the stationary exercise bike, make sure that you get started. There is no better day than today to start taking care of your health. Before you know it, you will be so used to the exercise that you will feel bad if you ever miss a day.
